The final part of our basic preparedness plan (Get a kit. Make a plan…) is to Be informed. Knowing what kinds of disasters can occur in your area is a major part of being properly prepared. The Columbus area can be afflicted by several kinds of disasters—tornadoes and severe winter storms are two recent examples.
Make sure that you have a good grasp on what can occur in your area. Watch weather updates so you can prepare for predictable interruptions in your daily routine. This includes knowing how local authorities will alert you. Know what warning sirens sound like, and what they mean. During times of disaster, danger increases when you are caught off guard. Besides building an emergency kit and having a disaster action plan in place, make an effort to stay informed about your surroundings.
