31 Days 31 Ways- Volunteer for the Disaster Action Team

DAT member during the 2007 Southern California Wildfires

When I think about helping people, I get this picture in my head of a hands-on situation. There I am, clad in Red Cross vest and lanyard, hauling sand bags and rescuing people from rapidly rising flood waters. Realistically, very few organizations can offer these kinds of hands-on volunteer opportunities to the public. But if you are anything like me and you share my dream of being in the middle of the disaster, lending the most immediate and literal help, the Red Cross has a lot to offer. The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team responds to over 400 home fires and other disasters each year. If you’re looking for an opportunity like the one I dreamed, you should consider joining the Disaster Action Team (DAT).

DAT members provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. What is more challenging and simultaneously rewarding than responding to a 2am fire call where a family has just lost everything they own?
