Compassion and humor (at my expense), what a scene! Myself and two other volunteers had the opportunity to meet an amazing family with a great support system in the north end of Columbus. We arrived to find a woman in tears – she lost almost everything in the fire. She was holding a wedding picture, only slightly singed by fire. You could sense the relief as we arrived on-scene to help. By the end of our time, we were able to give her money for food, got her in touch with the nurse on call regarding the replacement of prescriptions get the claims process rolling for her, and ultimately make her laugh. The hugs, the amazement of human compassion, the tears, the laughter and the friendships formed with teammates – it’s what keeps me coming back for more. I’m so thankful to be a Red Cross volunteer.
