Behind the curtain: Meet Kate Powers

We hope you like our new series that introduces you to some of the people who make our work happen. Feel free to posts questions you may have for these staff and volunteers and we will make sure to get you answers!

Meet Kate Powers, Lifeline Account Representative

1. How long have you been involved with the Red Cross?

I started working for the Red Cross 14 months ago.

2. What do you love most about your job?

I love knowing that I am helping keep seniors safe in their homes, allowing them to live independently longer. (Learn more about the Lifeline Medical Alarm Program here.)

3. Did you or any family/friends have experience with the Red Cross before you started?

No but I have always admired the Red Cross and their mission.

4. What is one thing that surprised you most about working here?

All of the services we offer. Before interviewing I did not realize there was a health and safety department that focused on training. I knew about the aquatics and learn to swim programs. Also, I think the transportation program is amazing.

5. What Red Cross experience would you like to share with our readers?

It seems everyone has a story or a link to the Red Cross. I am out in the community and when I talk to Seniors I always hear, I used to volunteer for the Red Cross or I donate blood or they were instructors. It is great that so many people have ties to our organization.

6. What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children. They are 7 and 3 and are so fun to watch grow and experience new things.

There are more than 300 residents using the Lifeline Medical Alarm service in greater Columbus. We have seen children sign their aging parents up for the program and have also seen many older adults who live alone at home take advantage of this service. Learn more about Lifeline here.
